Maroon Bests White to Take Alumni Game Crown 9 - 6

The rain fell all morning, but by the afternoon the clouds parted and we had dry weather and some sun for this year’s Alumni Game and Family BBQ.  Over 25 alumni came back to the Prep to prove that they still got it out on the field, plus a handful of other alums and their families, as well as some current player parents, cheered from the sidelines.

Instead of splitting the alums by even/odd graduation years, as we’ve done in the past, we used the “sticks in” method to pair the squads.  This year we had three sets of brothers competing out on the field - Chris Smith ‘11/Connor Smith ‘14, Patrick Coughlin ‘15/Eamon Coughlin ‘15, and Hudson Marciano ‘24/Nicholas Marciano ‘26.  After some good natured smack talking we were ready to go with the White team represented in goal by Sean Miller ‘21, while Maroon had Damien McGough ‘95 and James Werner ‘14 between the pipes.

The Maroon team came out quick, netting four straight to take a 4 - 0 lead until the White squad finally got on the board when Connor Smith ‘14 ripped a shot just inside the pipe to make it 4 - 1.  The White team then went on a roll to eventually take a 6 - 5 lead before Maroon shut them down, highlighted by Colin Malarchuk ‘16 doling out a few yard sale checks.  Three straight from Maroon made it a 9 - 6 final.  MVP goes to Craig Ruckman ‘95 and Mark Powers ‘02 who manned the BBQ grill for the post game festivities.

Damien McGough ‘95 takes the prize for oldest alum, showing the guys with gray hair can still play.  Playing out of the goal as an LSM, he scored at the end of the first half impressing no one but himself and his kids on the sideline.  Incoming freshman Nicholas Marciano was our youngest player representing the new Class of 2026, getting a special dispensation from the Top Corner Club to play in place of his lax alumni dad Anthony Maricano ‘90 (a last minute scratch due to a supposed “knee injury.”)  Hudson Marciano ‘24 also scored proving both boys are already better than their father.

Thanks to all who came out to make it a fun and successful afternoon.  We’re looking forward to an even better turnout for next year!
