/The Rams start this week off tomorrow out on Long Island against Kellenberg, who won both meetings last year and four in a row against the Prep. The Firebirds are 2 - 5 against several Long Island CHSAA and public school opponents. Fordham then hosts Long Island’s St. John The Baptist, who the Rams beat last year 14 - 10, and have a seven game win streak against. The Cougars are currently 3 - 4 and riding a three game win streak. Saturday is an away contest against Section 1’s Mahopac. The Indians are 5 - 3 with a handful of decisive Section 1 wins and close losses against Yorktown, John Jay, and Byram Hills, who the Rams will face in a couple weeks.
The recently announced Lacrosse Endowment continues to grow and we’re happy to announce John Duffy P’95, P’96, P’99 has generously offered a matching challenge where he will match the first $10,000 of donations in any amount under $250. No amount is too small and they all add up. For alumni having a reunion this May you can choose to designate the endowment for your reunion gift when registering. Read about and monitor the progress of the endowment here.
We’d like to get a few dates on your calendar for some future events. We’re aiming for Sunday June 12th for our Alumni Game and Family BBQ. After two years off due to COVID it will be nice to get fellow alums out on the field. Is this the year the young guns finally keep up with the “old guys?” We also will be restarting our annual equipment drive to benefit CityLax and Bronx Lacrosse. Equipment donations can be brought to the home game on Saturday May 7th or sent into school with your boys during that week. As in years past, feel free to collect from friends, neighbors, local youth league, and club teams. These organizations do a great job getting the gear into kids’ hands.
Best of luck to Ryan Gorup ‘07 - Prep alum, teacher, and lax coach - as he competes with the Croatian national team in the European Lacrosse Championships.
Don Bosco Recap: L 22 - 2
Don Bosco drew first blood scoring three goals within the first two and a half minutes before the Rams got their legs. The Prep defense helped stop the bleeding by shutting down a Bosco man up opportunity but the bounces kept going the Ironmen’s way as a rocket by Lewis Moore ‘23 (New Rochelle) hit the pipe. One more goal from the Ironmen at the 6:20 mark made it 4 - 0. On the ensuing faceoff, a win and scrappy ground ball by Tommy Gies ‘23 (Rye) gave the Rams possession and they did a great job working the ball around before Jack O’Leary ‘23 (Rye) came off a Jack Freel ‘23 (Manhattan) pick at GLE and wrapped it around the Bosco keeper to cut the deficit to three at 4:22.
The second quarter saw both teams have equal time of possession but some turnovers and a couple shots hitting the pipes left the Rams with no goals while Bosco dropped six in the net to take a 10 - 1 lead into the half. The Ironmen momentum continued in the third quarter as they dominated possession and the goals followed, scoring eight more in the period and taking a 18 - 1 lead into the fourth. Bosco added to the lead with four more scores before Charlie English ‘23 (Port Chester) stutter-stepped past his defender at the top of the restraining box and launched a laser past the Ironmen goalie with a minute to go and a 22 - 2 final.
Stat Line: O’Leary ‘23 1G/5GBs, Gies ‘23 7GBs, Muccia ‘23 (Rye) 3GBs, Lalonde ‘25 (New Fairfield) 12 saves
Bergen Catholic Recap: L 16 - 3
Scoring started early as the Crusaders took advantage of a fast break off the opening faceoff to break the ice and netted three more to take a 4 - 0 lead with five minutes left in the quarter. The Prep got on the board at the 2:04 mark off a great dodge up top by Charlie English ‘23 which forced a slide as he dumped it off to Jack O’Leary ‘23, who found a wide open Jack Freel ‘23 who deposited a lefty bouncer to make it 4 - 1. A notch at one minute remaining took the Bergen Catholic lead to 5 - 1 as the quarter ended. The second quarter belonged to the Crusaders as they held the majority of possession and scored seven goals versus the Prep’s one, a coast to coast Charlie English ‘23 clear and rip to the stick side of the Bergen Catholic goalie.
Things settled down defensively for the Rams in the third quarter but Bergen Catholic was able to extend the lead to 15 - 2 in the period. The Prep won the fourth quarter in terms of turnovers, groundballs, and possession but were even with the Crusaders in goals at one each. Charlie Englogh ‘23 found Lewis Moore ‘23 at 2:03 remaining for the third Rams goal of the day and the 16 - 3 final.
Stat Line: Moore ‘23 2G, English ‘23 1G/1A, O’Leary ‘23 1A, Lalonde ‘25 10 saves
