The Rams took home their first win of the season with a solid victory over Kennedy Catholic. The contest was a back and forth grind with the Prep taking one goal leads and the Gaels persistently tying it up. Kennedy got its first lead of the game, 9 - 8, late in the third quarter before the Prep dominated the fourth quarter, retaking the lead and adding some insurance goals for the 14 - 10 win. Midweek the Prep headed up to Connecticut in the cold and rain to face Connecticut power Wilton, which resulted in a 16 - 3 loss. Reigning Section 1 champions Bronxville were up next on Saturday and the home game location at Holy Child in Rye made for a good turnout of Prep parents and alums. The Rams hung tough with the Broncos 3 - 1 through the first quarter, off the back of Trey Lalonde ‘25’s (New Fairfield) stellar goaltending and seven saves. Bronxville dominated the second quarter with near perfect shooting, putting up nine goals and leading 12 - 3 at the half. Solid goaltending by both keepers kept the second half much tighter, but the Rams could only muster two more goals (and several pipes) to end up on the wrong end of a 17 - 5 final.
Congratulations to Hudson Pifer ‘23 (Croton-on-Hudson), William Leddy ‘24 (White Plains), and James Davis ‘24 (Rye) for registering their first career goals against Kennedy Catholic. The season to date stats have been added to the Top Corner Club website and can be found here.
The upcoming week is all Jerz as the Rams head over the Hudson to face two of the top teams in New Jersey. First up on Tuesday is Don Bosco who is 3 -1 including a one goal loss to Inside Lacrosse #24 nationally ranked Ridgewood (NJ) and a one goal win against Maryland power Gilman. The Ironmen also have a 14 - 6 victory over the Rams’ opponent on Thursday, Bergen Catholic. In their last meeting in 2019 Bosco got the better of Fordham 7 - 2. Bergen Catholic is currently 1 - 3 including the Don Bosco loss and a 12 - 10 loss to common opponent Stepinac.
We’d like to welcome Joe Shanagan who was recently added to the coaching staff. Joe is a former three year defensive starter and team MVP at UPenn and has previous coaching experience out on Long Island.
Kennedy Catholic Recap: W 14 - 10
Kennedy opened the scoring early in the first but Lewis Moore ‘23 (New Rochelle) answered with a sweeping lefty bouncer at the 8:28 mark. Hudson Pifer ‘23 gave the Rams the lead a minute and a half later, scooping up a loose ball in front of the Gaels cage. The defense of William Muccia ‘23 (Rye), Jack Powers ‘23 (Manhattan), and Jack Lucchese ‘24 (Somers) shut down the Kennedy offense for the majority of the quarter until the Gaels tied it up 2 - 2 in the last minute.
Following a Kennedy goal to start the second quarter, Jack Freel ‘23 (Manhattan) blew past his defender from behind the goal and deposited the ball over the Gael keeper’s shoulder to tie it up. Jack O’Leary ‘23 (Rye), in what has become a familiar sight the past two seasons, got topside from behind the cage and scored with a lefty bouncer to give the Rams a 4 - 3 lead. The lead was short lived as Kennedy tied it up on their next possession but the Rams made it 5 - 4 on Lewis Moore ‘23’s second of the day. An extra man opportunity for Kennedy allowed them to tie it up again with 5:28 to go in the half. Jack O’Leary ‘23 responded immediately, muscling past his defender along the GLE and notching his second and Lewis Moore ‘23 took the lead to 7 - 5 at the 1:25 mark. A Kennedy goal with six seconds left made it 7 - 6 at the half.
Kennedy tied it up once again in the third before Jack Freel ‘23 drove down the middle and put a rocket past the Gaels’ goalie at the seven minute mark. The lead didn’t last long as Kennedy tied it up with a minute and half left in the quarter and took its first lead at 9 - 8 on its next possession. Early in the 4th the Prep tied it back up on a quick Jack Freel ‘23 feed to James Davis ‘24 (Rye) on the crease who quicksticked it in. Minutes later Freel ‘23 found William Leddy ‘24 (White Plains) who gave the Rams the lead again but Kennedy responded immediately making it 10 - 10. At the eight minute mark Tommy Gies ‘23 (Rye) blasted a goal from 15 yards out to give the Rams the lead, which they never gave up. Three insurance goals from Jack O’Leary ‘23, William Leddy ‘24, and Tommy Gies ‘23 in rapid succession gave the Rams a 14 -10 victory.
Stat Line: Freel ‘23 2G/2A, Moore ‘23 3G, O’Leary ‘23 3G/5GBs, Gies ‘23 2G/10GBs, Pifer ‘23 1G/7GBs, Davis ‘24 1G, Lalonde ‘25 11 saves
Bronxville Recap: L 17 - 5
The game began with Trey Lalonde ‘25 making three great saves in a row but Bronxville broke the ice at 7:53 and followed it up 30 seconds later to take a 2 - 0 lead. Following a failed man up opportunity Jack O’Leary ‘23 rolled past his defender up top and launched a high bouncer past the Broncos goalie. Bronxville took the lead to 3 - 1 with a minute to go in the quarter off a coast to coast fast break.
The second quarter belonged to the Broncos as they fired off four straight goals and their keeper stood on his head making saves. Jack Freel ‘23 finally snuck one by the Broncos goalie at 7:13, driving from behind the cage and depositing it in the back of the net and making it 7 - 2. Another four straight from Bronxville took the score to 11 - 2 before Jack Freel ‘23 took his defender from behind the cage and skipped one past the Broncos’ goalie’s legs with 1:03 remaining. A late score from Bronxville left it 12 - 3 at the half.
On the first possession of the second half some good ball movement led to Jack O’Leary ‘23 feeding Jack Freel ‘23 who put it stick side high past the Broncos’ goalie. Following a Broncos goal, Lewis Moore ‘23 found Jack O’Leary ‘23 who launched a lefty worm burner past the Bronxville keeper making it 13 - 5 with 4:15 to go. Two more from the Broncos made it 15 - 5 at the end of the third. Both goalkeepers continued to play well in the fourth quarter, keeping things tight, but the Broncos found the net two more times to take the game 17 - 5.
Stat Line: Freel ‘23 3G/6GBs, O’Leary ‘23 2G/1A/5GBs, Moore ‘23 1A, Lalonde ‘25 18 saves
