Rams Face Long Island Lutheran, Iona Prep, and Cornwall High School This Week
/The Rams picked up a solid win Saturday versus Guilderland HS, bouncing back from two losses earlier in the week to Bronxville HS and Long Island’s Port Washington HS. Port Washington took an early 4 - 1 lead and extended it into halftime before the Prep played them tough and hung around in the second half, but couldn’t scratch back leading to a 13 - 6 final. The game against Bronxville was close the whole way as the teams were knotted up 4 - 4 at the end of one quarter and the Broncos held a 7 - 6 lead at the half. Deep in the fourth quarter Bronxville held a 12 - 9 advantage but the Rams stormed back, scoring three in a row and tying the game 12 - 12 on Jakob Gilbert ‘26’s (Bedford) pole goal. The teams then traded goals but Bronxville was able to notch three in the waning minutes, including an empty netter, to take the 16 - 13 win.
The boys played their best all around game of the season against Guilderland HS, taking a 4 - 2 lead after the first quarter and steadily scoring over the next three. Will Freel ‘26 (Manhattan) and Aidan Pymm ‘27 (Rye) led the way with 4G/2A and 4G/3A, respectively. The defense, led by Gilbert ‘26’s (Bedford) 14 groundballs, helped allow only three scores across the final three quarters, while the goalie squad of Cash Berner ‘27 (Rye), Ben Rose ‘28 (River Vale), and Peter Olivo ‘28 (Crestwood) combined for 20 saves in the 14 - 5 victory.
Congratulations to Drew Pagen ‘26 (Rye) on reaching 100 career points in the Guilderland HS game. He now has 65 goals and 35 assists in his career…….and counting. Pymm ‘27 has been on a tear lately, tallying 14 goals and nine assists over the past four games, averaging just under six points per game over that stretch.
The Prep has another three game week, heading out tomorrow to Long Island Lutheran, then to New Rochelle to face Iona Prep, before hosting Cornwall HS on Murphy Field on Saturday. LiLu is 4 - 6 with losses to mutual opponents Port Washington (14 - 3) and Poly Prep (15 - 10). The Rams have taken two out of the past three meetings but the Crusaders were victorious in the last meeting, winning 8 - 6 last year. Thursday’s showdown in New Rochelle needs no introduction as the boys face rival and #18 nationally ranked Iona Prep. The Gaels are 8 - 2 with one of the tougher schedules in the area and their only losses to St. Anthony’s (7 - 2) and a double OT loss to New Canaan HS on Saturday. Upstate Section 9’s Cornwall comes to the Bronx at 7 - 1, having beaten most of its local competition. This is the first meeting between the Rams and the Dragons.
The JV squad has been off to a great start going 6 - 2 with its losses to two of the best programs in Section 1 (8 - 7 vs. Bronxville, 9 - 4 vs. Somers). Coach McQuade and the crew will bring the juice against three opponents this week, starting with a tough Kellenberg team, rival Iona Prep, and Hackley.
Save the date for this year’s Alumni Game and Family BBQ on Sunday, June 7th. We’ll be back with more details shortly.
