Rams Finish Regular Season This Week With Stepinac and Greenwich
/The Rams started last week off with a solid win against Long Island Lutheran, picking up a 7 - 6 victory and avenging last year’s two goal loss. Fordham built an early lead and went up by five in the first half, but the Crusaders chipped away to make it 7 - 4 at the half. The LiLu defense then clamped down on the Prep, while their offense picked up two more scores, but the Rams dug deep and held off the rally for the 7 - 6 win. Midweek the Prep ran into rival Iona Prep, having one of their best seasons in years and nationally ranked #18, whose roster of college level talent put the Rams in a hole early. The Gaels kept the pressure on, dominating possession and adding to their lead as the game went on. The Prep had five scorers, led by two apiece from Dima Athanson ‘26 (Mamaroneck) and Aidan Pymm ‘27 (Rye), but the boys were overmatched and Iona took the win.
The final game of the week was a tough overtime loss to Cornwall Central High School. The teams were knotted up 3 - 3 after one quarter and the Prep took a 7 - 6 halftime lead before the Dragons went on a run to go ahead 14 - 9 in the fourth quarter. Undaunted, the Rams came storming back to tie the game and force overtime. Unfortunately, Cornwall struck first in extra time to steal the 15 - 14 win. The Rams were paced again by Athanason ‘26 and Pymm ‘27, who notched four goals and an assist and six goals and four assists, respectively. Pymm ’27’s 10 points were the most by a Ram since Jack Freel ‘23 (Manhattan) notched nine (6G/3A) against St. Joseph’s - Metuchen in 2022.
Tomorrow the Rams host Stepinac for their annual in-season showdown. The Prep and Stepinac split their two games last year with Fordham winning the regular season contest and the Crusaders taking the win in the CHSAA playoff semi-finals. This season Stepinac is 5 - 11 facing a handful of common opponents, including losses to Kellenberg, Bronxville, Iona Prep, and Bergen Catholic and a win versus Cardinal Hayes. On Saturday Greenwich High School comes to the Bronx for the Prep’s regular season finale on Senior Day. Greenwich is 5 - 6, against its majority Connecticut opponents, and the teams have split their last two meetings - the Prep winning in 2023 and Greenwich in 2024.
Save the date for this year’s Alumni Game and Family BBQ on Sunday, June 7th. We’ll be back with more details shortly.
