FP Lacrosse to Begin 30th Season at Jesuit Lacrosse Classic

***For those of you whose boys have recently graduated from the Prep or college, please remind them to sign up again for the Top Corner Club distribution with their current emails (here).  We have gotten a bunch of emails bounced back when their addresses were turned off after graduation.***

The 2019 Fordham Prep varsity lacrosse season begins this week as the team heads down to Miami for the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic.  This year marks the 30th anniversary of the program, one that found immediate success even in its infancy and has grown to become a regional power with national recognition.  The growing number of championships, All-American and CHSAA accolades, and alums playing in college is a testament to what the players, coaches, and parents have built over the past three decades.  Stay tuned this season as we recognize highlights from the history of Fordham Prep lacrosse.

The 2018 season was one of the most successful in school history as the team finished 12 – 4 winning the CHSAA “AA” City Championship while registering a marquee 6 - 4 win over perennial power John Jay (recap) and two wins over Iona Prep:  a 7 - 6 OT thriller (recap) and a 10 - 9 victory in the city championship (recap). The squad’s only losses were to Rye, Wilton (CT) in 2OT, and twice to #10 nationally ranked power St. Anthony’s. The Prep will be looking to a new slate of players to step up and deliver in 2019 as it graduated two All-Americans, the CHSAA Midfielder of the Year, CHSAA Defensemen of the Year, as well as 90% of its goal scoring. The defense will be anchored by returning starters Patrick McAllister ‘19 (Manhattan), Ethan Tym ‘19 (New Rochelle), and Stephen Zupicich ‘19 (Bronxville).

This year’s team starts the season at #4 in the Lohud.com boys lacrosse local ranking (here) and will face three other currently ranked teams on its schedule (John Jay, Iona Prep, Stepinac).  The first game of the season is this Friday, March 22nd when the team faces off against Belen Jesuit (FL) at the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic.  Taking advantage of the southern weather, Belen Jesuit has already played ten games, registering a 9 - 1 record and outscoring opponents 145 - 39.  In the second game of the JLC the Prep takes on national power Gonzaga (DC) who is currently 1 - 2 with close loses to McDonough (MD) and Boy’s Latin (MD) and an OT win versus Georgetown Prep (MD).  Speaking of Georgetown Prep (MD), Fordham will be heading down there to face the Hoyas for its third game of the season.

The remainder of the first half of the schedule includes a couple trips to Connecticut (Wilton, Weston), a rematch with John Jay, and a trip over the Hudson to St. Peter’s Prep before facing rival Iona Prep in mid-April.  The back half of the schedule includes the usual CHSAA foes and several Westchester/Section 1 teams (Rye, Bronxville, Rye Country Day) as well as hosting Loyola - Los Angeles (CA). The Prep finishes up the regular season by traveling again to New Jersey to play Don Bosco Prep (NJ) and then hosting Westfield (NJ) in what will be the alumni watch game.  You can check out the full schedule (here).

Congratulations to Stephen Zupicich ‘19 for being named to the Lohud.com Boys Lacrosse Elite 11 pre-season list (here).  Zupicich ‘19 and Ethan Tym ‘19 were also named to the Lohud.com players to watch list for the upcoming season (here).
