Rams Conclude Regular Season, Face Stepinac in Playoffs

The Prep concluded its regular season falling to a pair of New Jersey teams. Don Bosco Prep notched a 7 - 2 victory over the Rams earlier in the week before the Prep fell to Westfield 14 - 2 on Saturday. The loss to Westfield didn’t overshadow what was a beautiful, sunny afternoon on Murphy Field where the program honored the 14 seniors on the team. The team will play Archbishop Stepinac tomorrow at 4:30pm in White Plains in the CHSAA “AA” playoffs.

The Rams finished up the past week with a loss to Lohud.com #3 ranked John Jay and a dominant win versus St. Peter’s Prep (NJ). On tap for this week is only one game, but that one game happens to be tomorrow against Iona Prep at Murphy Field at 4:30pm. The Gaels will be looking to avenge their two losses to the Prep last year; a 7 - 6 OT thriller during the regular season (recap) and a 10 - 9 game for the CHSAA CIty Championship (recap). Not that anyone needs a refresher on what this rivalry means to both schools, but as a reminder to how tight this rivalry has become here are some numbers. Since 1992, the Fordham / Iona game has been decided by one goal 18 times with one goal games occurring twice in a season five times (1992, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018). On top of that, the games have been decided in overtime seven times including twice in triple overtime (2008, 2014).

Iona is currently ranked #4 in the Lohud.com rankings (here) with a record of 6 - 1 and wins over Bergen Catholic (NJ), Don Bosco Prep (NJ), and a 10 - 6 win over Stepinac. Their only loss is an 8 - 7 contest against Kellenberg. Come on out and cheer on the Rams tomorrow afternoon!

John Jay Recap (L 10 - 3):

The Rams headed up to John Jay to face one of the consistently top programs in the area who was looking to avenge its loss to the Prep last year (recap). John Jay netted a few more taking a 6 - 1 lead into halftime. The Prep started the scoring in the second half with a quickstick goal from a cutting Quinn English ‘19 (Port Chester) off a pass from X from Owen Murray ‘20 (Larchmont). This was then answered by two more goals from the Indians to stretch the lead to 8 - 2. Brendan Sowarby ‘19 (Manhattan) closed out the 3rd quarter by scoring the Prep’s third goal with 11 seconds left off a rebound from John Jay’s keeper. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Rams could get and the Indians took home the 10 - 3 win.
